Tyres & Tubes:

Whether you ride your bike for sport or exercise, you can't get going unless each tyre contains an integral piece of equipment -- an inner tube. This is a separate tube inside each tyre that inflates with air. The width and diameter of your wheel will determine what size inner tube you need. When your inner tube requires replacement, it's easy to figure out what size to get.

The tyre size is printed on the side wall of the tyre. For example, 26 x 1.87 indicates that the wheel is 26 inches in diameter and 1.87 inches in width. If your tyres are dirty or worn, it may be difficult to locate the print.

What Do The Numbers Mean?

Imperial and Metric Sizing

Example: 26x2.1 and 700x23c
These are the sizes most people recognise. The first number is the diameter and the second is the width of the tyre. However, they do not exactly represent the actual size of your tyre so can lead to confusion in a few cases as outlined further down this page.

ETRTO Sizing

For Example: 54-559 and 23-622
ETRTO sizing is a world-wide standard developed by the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation. This sizing method is much more accurate by exactly describing the tyre width and rim diameter in millimetres and ensures you are definitely getting the right size tyre or tube.

You can use either size method but on the whole metric and imperial sizing works fine especially for inner tubes as they are much more adaptable to various sizes, unlike tyres which are rigid in diameter and therefore must be matched to the rim size accurately.
